2018 Silmo d’Or awards

Silmo announced its list of honorees for the 2018 Silmo d’Or awards at the Silmo d’Or gala event on Saturday 29 September at the Musee des Arts Forains, Paris.

The panel of judges for the jury was led by Belgian designer and interior designer, Michel Penneman.

FMO announces new Optrafair Exchange trade fair in UK

The Federation of Manufacturing Opticians has announced that Optrafair, the United Kingdom’s flagship optical exhibition, has been relaunched.The show is scheduled for 30 March-1 April 2019 at Birmingham National Exhibition Centre.
In addition to a new theme is a new name – Optrafair Exchange.

The show will incorporate fashion, medical, and optics. Each segment will be covered throughout the show, including new exhibitors and dedicated CET streams.

A completely restructured education program will be coordinated by the FMO with the support of its partners in the sector.

This program covers eight distinct streams: dispensing, contact lenses, orthoptic, refractive, health and lifestyle, technician, clinical optometry, and business.

The FMO is working closely with the Association of British Dispensing Opticians, the British Contact Lens Association and The College of Optometrists.

SILMO Sydney opens today

The SILMO Sydney trade fair opens today at the Exhibition Centre at the International Convention Centre, Darling Harbour.

The fair is open from 10am 20, 21 and 22 July and will close at 6pm on the first two days and 5 pm on the third.

It is being partnered between Optometry NSW/ACT and organizer Expertise Events, and supported by the Australasian College of Optical Dispensers, the Macular Disease Foundation, the Brien Holden Vision Institute and Optometry Giving Sight.

Meanwhile, the first SILMO Bangkok in Thailand was held on 20-22 June, with organisers saying it “reflected success as the new gateway to ASEAN’s optical industry” with 3,750 national and international trade visitors from 42 countries attending.

Loy Joon How, general manager of Impact Exhibition Management Co, said: “The theme ‘Business Meets Fashion’ was reflected through the showcases of the latest trends and eyewear collections from over 250 brands, and aimed to bridge the gap between suppliers and manufacturers of eyewear, lenses, instruments, equipment, machinery and business services by facilitating and providing learning opportunities.

The Thailand International Optometry Conference, organised by the Association of Thai Optometrists, attracted 550 optometrists and opticians to its two-day program.

The second SILMO Bangkok will be held on 19-21 June 2019 at Impact Exhibition and Convention Centre.

48th MIDO exhibition

The 48th MIDO optical exhibition was held on 24-26 February iin Milan, Italy, attracting 1,305 exhibitors for its 52,000 sqm of floor space in seven sold-out pavilions.

Eye Health Awareness Day, a meeting dedicated to eye health and eye care, was held on 25 February – the first time such an event was held at MIDO that brought together international experts who share an interest in promoting awareness of the importance of eye health.

Participants incuded: Silvio Paolo Mariotti of the World Health Organisation; Giuseppe Ruocco, secretary-general of Italy’s Ministry of Health; and Francesco Bandello of the National Scientific Committee for the Prevention of Blindness.

In the words of Mr Bandello: “The meeting was conceived to bring together international influencers in the field of eye health and eye care with the idea of sharing experiences, programs and good practices, as well as maximising the efficacy of activities and messages about this topic.

“We hope to build new cooperative partnerships among industry players, who will have the opportunity to present their experiences before a highly-qualified audience of visitors from around the world.

“Guests include organisations and associations from Italy, France, the United States and Spain.
